christology and sanctification

Class 1:

(002-4)

Generation of the Word

This course considers the person of the Word as He exists within the unity of the divine essence as God: “and the Word was God” (Jn. 1:1). It will cover the principles necessary for understanding how God is both One and Three as well as a treatment of each of the divine persons. The course ends by looking at the divine missions by which the Son and the Holy Spirit are sent into the world for our salvation.

(Instructor: John O'Neill, PhD)

Class 2:

(002-5)

Incarnation

This course considers the person of the Word according to His new mode of existence in the world as man, and how and why “the Word became flesh” (Jn. 1:14). It will cover the principles necessary for understanding how one divine person exists in two natures, as perfect God and perfect man, and how Christ has grace as both an individual man and as Head of the Church. It will finish with a look at the consequences and implications of this perfect union of God and man in Christ, especially as they relate to our salvation through Christ’s mediation.

(Instructor: John O'Neill, PhD)

Class 3:

(002-6)

Christology and Redemption

This class looks in depth at what Christ the Word did and suffered for our salvation when, having become flesh, He “dwelt among us” (Jn. 1:14). The mysteries of Christ’s life will be explored especially with a view to how they are continual sources of our sanctification today. The course will emphasize the deifying effects of our participation in the life of God through conformity to Christ. The role of Mary, Mother of God, in this process will also be treated. The principal works used will be the theology of St. Thomas Aquinas and the spiritual writings of Bl. Columba Marmion.
